The Next Chapter: Morgan Stanley's Unified Mumbai GIC Campus

Morgan Stanley Mumbai GIC: Unifying Global Talent, Redefining Workplace Excellence.

As the India Workplace Strategy and Design Lead at Morgan Stanley, I was instrumental in leading the comprehensive workplace strategy, planning, design, and transformation management for the firm's unified Mumbai Global In-house Center (GIC) Campus. This pivotal 1 million square foot consolidation and relocation project involved transitioning 8,500+ employees spread across 7 buildings and 3 campus locations into a single, strategic 16-floor facility in Goregaon East, meticulously implementing Morgan Stanley’s global workplace guidelines.

My role focused on creating a future-ready, integrated campus that champions collaboration, innovation, and employee well-being, thereby reinforcing Mumbai's critical position as a vital global hub for Morgan Stanley's talent and technology. I successfully led a high-performing team to deliver this expansive campus, resulting in a remarkable 45% improvement in workplace satisfaction scores, creating best-in-class environments that attract top talent and optimize real estate investments. Additionally, I served as the primary liaison for India and regional management, as well as business unit leaders, streamlining communication and expertly managing all workplace requirements and occupancy planning.

Challenge

Morgan Stanley's growing operations in Mumbai were fragmented across various locations, leading to potential inefficiencies in collaboration, a dispersed corporate culture, and a less-than-optimal employee experience. The existing infrastructure may not have fully supported the advanced technological needs, sustainability goals, or the dynamic, collaborative environment required for a leading global financial services firm in its Global In-house Centre (GIC) operations.

Opportunity

Morgan Stanley identified a critical opportunity to consolidate its Mumbai workforce into a single, integrated, state-of-the-art campus in Goregaon East. This presented a chance to:

  • Streamline operations and foster seamless collaboration among over 7,000 employees.

  • Create a world-class workplace that embodies Morgan Stanley's commitment to innovation, employee well-being, and environmental sustainability.

  • Reinforce Mumbai's strategic importance as a global hub for talent and technology within the firm's global GIC network.

  • Design a future-ready, adaptable environment that attracts and retains top talent.

Action

Morgan Stanley undertook the development of its new, unified campus in Goregaon East, Mumbai. This comprehensive project involved:

  1. Strategic Consolidation & Design: Designed and constructed a sprawling, integrated campus to bring together over 7,000 employees previously spread across multiple locations.

  2. Focus on Collaboration & Innovation: Implemented a modern, flexible workplace design featuring a variety of collaborative zones, quiet rooms, ergonomic workstations, and advanced meeting spaces to foster teamwork and spark innovation.

  3. Prioritizing Employee Well-being: Incorporated elements crucial for employee health and comfort, such as abundant natural light, green spaces, dedicated wellness rooms, fitness centers, and diverse food and beverage options.

  4. Sustainability Leadership: Achieved LEED Platinum certification, underscoring a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and creating a highly sustainable operational footprint.

  5. State-of-the-Art Technology: Equipped the campus with cutting-edge technology infrastructure to support the complex and critical global operations of a leading financial institution.

  6. Diversity & Inclusion: Designed the physical space to be inclusive and reflective of Morgan Stanley's diverse workforce.

Outcome

The successful development of the unified Mumbai GIC Campus has resulted in:

  • A centralized and highly efficient Global In-house Centre in Mumbai, significantly enhancing operational synergy and fostering a cohesive corporate culture across all teams.

  • A vibrant and collaborative work environment that empowers over 7,000 employees, driving innovation and reinforcing Mumbai's critical role as a global talent and technology hub for Morgan Stanley.

  • A landmark achievement in corporate sustainability, with the campus receiving LEED Platinum certification, demonstrating a tangible commitment to environmental responsibility.

  • A dramatically elevated employee experience through world-class amenities, a focus on well-being, and flexible design, contributing to increased employee satisfaction, attraction, and retention.

  • Morgan Stanley's strengthened presence and commitment in India, providing its workforce with a premier, future-ready workplace that aligns with its global vision.
